Today's Topic - Yarn Fiber"

Yarn is made of many different fibers
and blends of those fibers.
But any fiber that can be spun or cut into long strips
can be crocheted or knitted.

And therefore, Classified as "yarn".

Yarn Makers and distributors
always put on the label what the yarn

is made out of. And be sure to always read the label,

as some yarns are combinations of other fibers.

1. Acrylic Yarn - The most popular yarn fiber is Acrylic, or Synthetic. It is inexpensive to make and inexpensive to purchase. And has really changed in the last few years.It is softer and smoother. It has a lot of bright colors and

can be used for just about any project.

Acrylic is safe to Machine wash and dry, and holds up well.

2. Wool Yarn - is an interesting medium as it can be soft or scratchy, thick or thin, depending on how it is spun. Of course it is made from the wool of sheep. It must be washed very carefully. If you machine wash and dry it-- it will felt or shrink. Which is great if you did it on purpose. It must be washed by hand, gently rubbing the dirty area,

and laid out to dry.

3. Alpaca Yarn - This yarn is a great yarn to use

if you are allergic to wool, as it is hypo allergenic.

It is also warmer them wool.

It can be mixed with other fibers, like acrylic to make a softer or for a warmer project. This yarn can be a little more expensive then wool or Acrylic, as it is harder to get.

5. Cotton Yarn - This is yarn made of 100% Cotton.

It is a great yarn for washcloths and towels, and for lots of other projects as well. This yarn can be stiff when worked up, but there are a few styles that are softer. Usually the colors are dyed, so be sure to wash in cold water.

6. Other Yarns - There are many other yarn fibers and yarn blends such as cashmere, ox, silk and other animal fibers. Sometimes these are blended with Acrylic or wool.

Again, read the yarn label. The yarn label will also give you instructions on how to wash the yarn.

7. Tarn - T- Shirt Yarn - This is yarn made of T Shirts that have been cut into strips. They can be cotton or poly blend, both work great. It's a great way to recycle old T Shirts in to something useful. I have made bags, rugs and baskets with this Yarn.

8. Plarn - Plastic Yarn - This is yarn made from plastic bags. This is a little time consuming but a great fun to do.
You can make shopping bags, baskets, place mats or rugs with this yarn.

The Bottom line is anything that can be cut or torn into long strips can be crocheted or knitted, and can be called Yarn.
Like table clothes, sheets, or jeans.

And you can crochet or knit with anything that is already in stings like rope, ribbon, thread, leather or cord.
